Every year, Dictionary.com announces the word of the year based on the central themes and frequent searches that best reflect the past 365 days. Earlier this week, Dictionary.com announced that the word for 2016 was “xenophobia” to comment on the rise of fear during the year. The company mentioned the rise of the alt-right as well as the Syrian refugee crisis as main points for selecting the word of the year.

Also MORE importantly in the announcement, Dictionary.com decided to list the runner-up word of the year, a bold, unprecedented risk. The runner-up of 2016 was announced to be the ubiquitous word: “Rimjob”. The CEO of Dictionary.com gave this statement about eating ass to reflect the 2nd place winner:

“Listen, there was nothing we could do about the runner-up. The word “rimjob” reflects what a shit show 2016 really was. We came into the year full of high hopes and expectations, but really just left surrounded by prominent assholes. Also, so many people have been searching for rimjobs lately. 2016 is truly the year of eating ass. Even I’ve hopped on the bandwagon.”

Following the conclusion of his speech, at least 12 audience members were recorded searching up the definition of “rimjob” on Dictionary.com.
